UNIVERSITY HISTORY

UNC Charlotte is the fourth largest of the 16 institutions within the University of North Carolina system and the largest institution in the Charlotte region.

The university comprises seven professional colleges and currently offers 16 doctoral programs, 59 master’s degree programs and 83 leading to bachelor’s degrees. More than 800 full-time faculty comprise the university’s academic departments and the 2005 fall enrollment exceeded more than 20,700 students. UNC Charlotte boasts more than 75,000 living alumni and adds 4,000 to 4,500 new alumni each year.

Accreditation

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees.

Points of Pride

UNC Charlotte is frequently recognized for its contributions to higher education, its outstanding faculty and the leadership role it plays in the region. Points of Pride communicate the ongoing accomplishments of the university.
  • BB&T donated $1 million to UNC Charlotte to create a program for the study of the moral foundations of capitalism.

  • UNC Charlotte’s leadership raised $115 million for its 2005 capital campaign It Takes A Gift. The university exceeded its $100 million goal.

  • The $23 million three-story Robinson Hall for the performing Arts opened in Fall, 2004. The elegant facility contains costume and scenic labs, a two-story tiered choral rehearsal hall, music library, instrumental rehearsal room, Musical instrument digital interface lab and a theatre with orchestra, mezzanine and box seating for 300 people.

  • Jamie Franki, associate professor in the art department, designed a rendering of am American bison that was selected by Federal Juries to adorn the reverse side of a new nickel scheduled to be circulated by the U.S. Mint. More than 800 million of the coins will be struck between spring and fall 2005.

  • UNC Charlotte’s new Bioinformatics Center will provide computational research and education programs to support the biotechnology efforts of the North Carolina Research Center in gene related research. The university will also develop curriculum for the center’s science and mathematics high school for high-achieving young women.

  • Men’s basketball was co-champion of the conference USA regular season and participated in the 2004 NCAA Tournament, while the women’s basketball team earned its second straight post-season bid with a trip to the Women’s NIT.

  • The National Science Foundation designated the UNC Charlotte Center for Precision Metrology as an Industry/University Cooperative Research Center. Such centers are recognized for their research excellence and are charged with breaking new scientific ground to help keep U.S. industries competitive in the global economy. The center is part of the Lee College of Engineering. Other universities with NSF designated centers include California-Berkeley, Colorado, Duke, Georgia Tech, Pennsylvania State, Purdue, Stanford and Texas A&M.
